Hip Spica Cast

From armpits down to the toes of the leg that has been operated on, and to above knee on the other leg.  This cast generally has one stick between the legs (above knee) to maintain hip position post-surgery, although this photo shows a variation.  It is cut out around the genital area for toileting.  This cast is generally used after an ostetomy and is worn approx 6-7 weeks.

Brace - Modified Scottish Rite

This brace is being worn post-pelvic osteotomy (at nights only),  to maintain the best possible containment of the femoral head.   Previously it was worn after an external fixator was removed for six weeks, all day every day (except for showering and swimming), then for a further six months at nights only.

External Fixator

The photo shows a girl in the States doing hydrotherapy with her external fixator in place.  Swimming is extremely beneficial for perthes kids and even more so with an external fixator on, as the movement is gentle and non-weightbearing.  The chlorine in the water helps with drying the pinsites out and keeping them clear of infection too.
